In his (1975) Zen in the Martial Arts, author Joe Hyams relates how Bruce Lee taught him it’s always better (and actually easier) to improve yourself than it is trying to make others appear worse (thereby making yourself falsely appear “better” by default).

It’s no secret Bruce Lee was a voracious student of all things strategic in general, and an admirer of Musashi and Sun Tzu in particular.

Sun Tzu’s adage quoted above90 breaks down into two distinct tasks:

First, we must make ourselves stronger and more secure, putting ourselves “beyond the possibility of defeat.”

Then, we wait and watch for our enemy to drop his guard.

So strongly did Sun Tzu feel about this point—first making ourselves invulnerable, then taking advantage of any lapse we detect in our enemy—that he actually repeats this advice later on, in chapter XIII, verse 11:
